The "Darth Maul" Line: A New Story That Began Almost by Chance

One of Leapin' Leachies' signature lines, the "Darth Maul" line, actually began from one breeder's curiosity. In 2011, while working with many Leachianus animals, Steve acquired two geckos. The first was a male sold as Koghis from the U.S.
The second was a female, also labeled Koghis, imported from Europe.
As he observed the pair together, Steve quickly felt that something was different. The male showed pink-toned pattern as a subadult, and the female had richer pattern and structure than typical Koghis. Body build and color both looked clearly different from the Koghis he had raised for years.
That curiosity became the start of a new project. Steve decided to breed the pair, and their offspring became the foundation of what we now call the Darth Maul line.
The name "Darth Maul" was inspired by the Star Wars character. The intense contrast of black and red reminded him of that iconic face. I also think the naming is perfect.
1: Lava (Namhong Reptile) / 2: Pumpkin (Leapin' Leachies) The line is known for vivid red pattern over deep green or black base, and the red often becomes deeper with maturity. Most importantly, this line tends to hold its color character consistently across generations.
Over the last few years, I have personally seen and imported many Darth Maul animals. In my view, this is one of the more genetically stable lines at Leapin', with the "red pattern + dark body tone" reliably inherited across generations. So I evaluate Darth Maul not only as visually attractive, but as a line with strong genetic consistency. Interestingly, when it first appeared, almost no one paid attention. People reacted with, "How is this different from other Leachies?" Then in 2014, everything changed. A special animal appeared with purple pattern spreading over a grayish body, and that single image shocked the community.
At the time, purple-pattern Leachies were especially popular, so that reveal drew massive attention. I still remember the first time I saw that photo. A few years later, the line surprised people again when melanistic animals started hatching from it.
Steve said even he had not expected it at all. And luckily, seven melanistic Darth Maul animals entered Korea from Leapin'. Six are adults now, and one appears to be subadult.
The Darth Maul line at Leapin' was not a flashy line from day one. It started unnoticed, then gradually proved itself over time in its own colors. The emergence of the purple-pattern animal and later melanistic hatchlings marked a new chapter, and to me one of the most dramatic evolutions in Leapin' history.
For me, the Darth Maul line means more than a bloodline. It is proof of what observation, curiosity, time, and consistency can create. That is exactly why I introduce this line through Isaac's Forest. Its genetic beauty, historical continuity, and human passion make it a story every Leachianus enthusiast should know.
